Like several of the images in the “Underfoot” series, High Tide Detritus has an “unbeautiful” title. As I worked on this collection of mussel shells on the Maine coast I thought about the dismissive vocabulary we use to describe less glamorous aspects of the landscape. A ditch. Leaf litter. Rot, decay, detritus. Unlovely language to describe what can be, at closer inspection, intricate and beautiful.
